An Englishman in New York
Sat 10 Apr 10
Drama
This film celebrates the life of Quentin Crisp, one of the most colourful, witty, and nonconformist gay figures of the 20th century.
Renowned for his sharp humour, Crisp achieved international fame when the film The Naked Civil Servant, based on his autobiography, was broadcast in 1975. The controversial film earned critical acclaim for actor John Hurt’s pitch-perfect portrayal of Crisp.
In An Englishman in New York, John Hurt reprises his role as Crisp in the latter years of the legend’s life. It begins in the late ‘70s when Crisp is invited to New York to dispense his unique brand of advice in a one-man stage show.
Through the years, Crisp’s talent and wit bring a host of characters into his circle, but his outspoken nature occasionally puts him at odds with the gay community.
An Englishman in New York will please both long time fans of Quentin Crisp and those encountering him for the first time.
