Brisbane Powerhouse presents

Briwyant

By Vicki Van Hout Produced by Performance Space

Wed 1 - Sat 4 Aug 2012

Bir'yun describes the brilliance, shimmer and shine of a pattern that seems to move before the eyes, animated by the essence of ancestral forces, in Yolgnu painting.

This is the inspiration for Vicki Van Hout's, Australian Dance Award nominee Briwyant, a work of extraordinary choreographic dexterity and interdisciplinary innovation that brings to the stage an experience both ageless and fleeting — a moment of connection.

Dance, dynamic projections and a layered, textured soundscape will transport audiences well beyond the confines of the theatre into a realm of literal and figurative stories. With precision and a fresh and original vision for Indigenous dance, Van Hout evokes, with compelling conviction, a future for Indigenous Australian contemporary dance that teams humour, history and raw physicality.

"Vicki Van Hout's choreography is some of the most idiosyncratic and inventive seen in Australian dance for a long time and her team of dextrous dancers execute it with high precision, unbelievable energy, humour and attitude. Van Hout has been a busy dancer, choreographer and researcher travelling extensively to investigate indigenous dance." -  RealTime Arts magazine Keith Gallasch

"It is like an epic in an hour: a mix of familial intimacy at its best and worst, the power of ancestral forces, surreal action and domestic platitudes… The result is engrossingly unpredictable." - The Sydney Morning Herald Jill Sykes

"Beautifully realised and conceived, Van Hout’s classical training with NAISDA and contemporary studies with Martha Graham School of Dance in New York are perfectly blended in Briwyant." - Australian Stage Jane Barton
