The Brodsky Quartet Series

Brisbane Powerhouse and Topology present OMG

Brodsky Quartet

Sat 7 Aug 2010

The Brodsky Quartet play Schubert, Golijov, Bartok and Ravel.

Three of the composers on this programme are known and appreciated for their exploration of cross-cultural musical genres, with no musical borders being imposed on their creative voices. Ravel’s String Quartet is one of the most popular of the quartet repertoire and contains elements of jazz, gamalan and Hispanic cross-rhythms, all incorporated in the classical form. Golijov incorporated many colliding musical traditions into his works; Tenebrae alternates sacred liturgical chant with Hebrew wailing. Bartok too, was the pioneer in collecting and collating folk melodies from Europe and weaving them into his magnificent music.

To open the program is a short gem from one of the great classical composers for string quartet, Schubert. The only existing movement of an unfinished quartet, it is a microcosm of emotional extremes.

The Brodsky Quartet are the team for the new century” Gramophone

"It's warming to be immersed in the Brodsky Quartet's tender music-making... their close interaction has a ballet-like beauty. The focal point was Ravel's String Quartet – the Brodskys built a close, mystical atmosphere, breathing the Spanish summer night's shadows, while the last movement's syncopated games were charged with feverish frenzy." Svenska Dagbladet, September 2007

"The Brodskys' achingly beautiful performance reached deep into the heart..." Rian Evans, Guardian, September 2006

"They are one of a handful of string quartets that have come to represent an elite in redefining the nature and function of a string quartet ensemble." The Scottish Herald
