Brisbane Powerhouse presents
Restrung
Brodsky Quartet
Thu 28 - Fri 29 Feb 08
Direct from the UK, the Brodsky Quartet returns to launch the new chamber festival, Restrung, in two passionate performances that will transcend the boundaries of the string quartet.
At the forefront of the international chamber music scene, the Brodsky Quartet are renowned for their mastery of classical repertoire. Collaborations with the likes of Sir John Tavener, Witold Lutoslawski, Peter Sculthorpe and Julian Nott have given the Brodskys an unrivalled opportunity to influence and inspire some of the newest work for string quartet. So much so that for their outstanding contribution to the world of music the Brodsky Quartet received a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award.
Bold collaborations with Elvis Costello, Anne Sofie von Otter, Björk, Paul McCartney and Sting reveal the versatility that has endeared the Brodsky Quartet to far-reaching audiences. Their live performances are punctuated with humorous commentary and the energy of the four standing performers (the cellist has her cello fitted with an extra-long spike).
The Brodsky Quartet will present exquisite masterpieces and early 20th century compositions, from Shubert’s bittersweet String Quartet in C to Mario Lavista's hypnotic soundscapes. The Brodskys will also perform Peter Sculthorpe’s Australian-inspired work, ‘From Nourlangie’ (a huge rock monolith in Kakadu National Park), with melodies based on a Torres Strait dance-song.
