Brisbane Powerhouse and Melbourne International Comedy Festival Present

Class Clowns 2012 Workshops, Heats and State Final

Wed 21 - Sun 25 Mar 2012

The search for the funniest clown returns!

Now in its 17th year (almost of age!) Class Clowns is Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s one-of-a-kind, national comedy competition for teens in secondary schools around the country. Alumni include Josh Thomas (Talkin’ Bout Your Generation), Triple J’s Tom Ballard and comedian Joel Creasey.

Queenslanders have been leading the pack at the past two National Grand Finals with Matt Ford from Cavendish Road State High stealing the crown in 2010 and Mia Winters of Robina State High taking the runner up title last year. We know we have the talent right here and we are looking for you!

The Class Clowns competition aims to encourage those cheeky monkeys from Years 9-12, lurking in classrooms to find their comic voice and channel their energy to entertaining a wider audience – and maybe make it to the National Grand Final to perform at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and win $2000!

Acts should be no more than 5 minutes, can be solo or in groups of up to 3, must be well rehearsed (and funny!) and can be sketch, musical, parody or stand up.

We strongly encourage local schools to not only enter acts but bring kids along to heats or finals to be an audience – a cheap (and sometimes free!), rollicking good time which may help them with their own written or performance work back in the classroom.

HOT OFF THE PRESS! Workshop Host and MC's in Brisbane will be Sam Simmons and Lindsay Webb.

'It’s sickening to see how far ahead these guys already are - they’ve already conquered first gig nerves and they can’t even drive. I got to work with some of these students in the Queensland workshops and it was awesome to see how committed they are to their comedy.'
-Sammy J, 2010 Class Clowns National Final Judge
