AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE CHOREGRAPHED BY HARTATI FROM JAKARTA, INDONESIA AS PART OF TARIAN BARU DARI INDONESIA (NEW DANCE FROM INDONESIA)

In this extraordinary dance the audience finds itself projected into the dancers’ desperate quest for freedom on a surreal and seemingly endless cycle of entrapment, like an infinite regression of Babushka dolls.

Inside these boxes are three women. They constantly struggle to escape, only to find themselves inside another box and then another and then another. The human body becomes the voice exploring the urge for emancipation.  

And where are we now? Inside or outside? 

Hartati's work showcases the beauty of the mysterious but lucid language of the female body. 

This season of Di Dalam/ Di Luar (In/Out) is the first time this work has been performed outside Indonesia. It premiered at Kominitas Salihara in Jakarta in 2009.

TARIAN BARU DARI INDONESIA (NEW DANCE FROM INDONESIA) 
The Minangkabau region in Indonesia is famous for food and dance and is home for the countries most important choreographers. 

Its unique alchemy of martial arts, folk dance, spiritual discipline, social formality and a penchant for migration, creates the nucleus for this breathtakingly beautiful and original marriage between ancient tradition and modernism. 

The two choreographers featured in Tarian Baru Dari Indonesia, Hartarti and Eri Mefry, both have their foundations in the coastal highlands of West Sumatra. 

Tarian Baru Dari Indonesia is supported by the Commonwealth through the Australia-Indonesia Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
