Brisbane Powerhouse presents Planet
Femi Kuti and The Positive Force
Tue 23 Nov 2010
Afrobeat royalty Femi Kuti and his 16 piece strong band, The Positive Force will visit Brisbane for the first time.
Returning after Womadelaide performances in 2007, Femi Kuti brings a rich lineage to the stage as son of Fela Kuti; whose awareness is at an all time high thanks to the Broadway production Fela! based on his life and music.
The eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Femi was born in London and grew up in the former Nigerian capital, Lagos. In 1977 Femi chose to move in with his father and eventually became a member of his father's band. Like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career.
He created his own band Positive Force in late 80s and in 2001, Femi collaborated on his album Fight to Win with a number of U.S. musicians, such as Common, Mos Def, and Jaguar Wright. A two-time Grammy nominee, Femi Kuti is recognised across the world as bridging Afrobeat with contemporary Soul and Hip-Hop and therefore increasing its appeal to a wider audience.
The stage is set for Femi Kuti and his 16 strong band The Positive Force to once again blaze a trail across Australia. With hypnotic grooves, powerful horn blasts, rhythmic basslines and life affirming vocal harmonies, this show will be one not to be missed.
