A BRITISH COUNCIL PROJECT CO-PRODUCED WITH SOUTH EAST DANCE
Curated by leading British film and dance figures, these films offer a comprehensive introduction to the history and development of screen dance.
Screen dance crossing the boundaries of avant-garde film and contemporary dance, by presenting choreography and film together.
Forward Motion includes rare archival footage and pioneering early dance films, alongside innovative and contemporary shorts. The Brisbane season will include an opening by awarded screen dance maker Professor Liz Aggiss; works by Wendy Houstoun, David Hinton, Magali Charrier and Douglas Gordon; the much acclaimed Lloyd Newson's The Cost of Living; and introductions by Akram Khan, Rosemary Butcher, Shobana Jeyasingh; and more.
PROGRAM
Brisbane Powerhouse is delighted to host leading British performer, choreographer and award winning screen dance maker, Professor Liz Aggiss, to lead an informative screen dance masterclass and introduce the film screenings in the evening.
SESSION 1: FORWARD MOTION: INTROS (approx 60 mins)
Professor Liz Aggiss introduces the genre of screen dance. This programme includes full length screen dance works contextualised by artist interviews. Includes:Touched by Wendy Houstoun and David Hinton, Tra La Laby Magali Charrier and Basini by LizAggiss and Billy Cowie.
SESSION 2: FORWARD MOTION: ARTISTS’ CHOICE (approx 80 mins)
High profile British dance makers, such as Akram Khan and Michael Clark, select and introduce a dance film that has inspired their practice. This includes Khan introducing Lloyd Newson’s multi-award winning The Cost of Living; Rosemary Butcher selecting an except of Feature Film by visual artist Douglas Gordon; and Shobana Jeyasingh choosing Miranda Pennell’s Tattoo.
One ticket price includes entry to both sessions.
SCREEN DANCE MASTERCLASS: A PERSONAL HISTORY (approx 2hrs)
This seminar presentation charts Professor Aggiss’ personal performance history from live to screen space and the shifts and considerations posed in reframing and re-conceiving a dance language for the screen. Using examples from her 30-year practice this presentation analyses her screen dance films from the initial ideas and written treatments to the final production. Free event. Booking required.
Please note: All presentations are suitable for people aged 16 years and older, from undergraduates to postgraduates. The film classification is recommended for people aged 15 years and older.
