Brisbane Powerhouse presents
FreQee
Tue 28 Aug - Sun 9 Sep 07
31 August - Official Opening Party 7pm - midnight
Each artist will start with the same object, a blank 9” designer vinyl toy, and then create an artwork in their own individual style.
The opening night will feature live DJ’s and door prizes, including Tattoo vouchers from All Star Tattoo and a 9” DIY Bunee QEE.
FreQee is the follow up to the 2006 ‘DEX’ exhibition, which was also held at Brisbane Powerhouse. ‘DEX’ featured a similar group of 40 lowbrow artists creating works on skate decks. After the smashing success of that particular show, organisers Brett Weekes and Giles Kilham decided the Brisbane art scene needed a similar shake up in 2007.
Each artist involved in the FreQee exhibition will be producing an artwork on a DIY Bunee QEE figure from Hong Kong based toy company TOY2R. The DIY Bunee QEE is a blank white 9” tall vinyl figure. Because of its simple design and shape the figure can be easily modified.
The designer vinyl art toy movement has grown in popularity over the past few years appealing mainly to underground, lowbrow and street based cultures. Various DIY vinyl figures have been the base for major exhibitions all over the world. FreQee will be the first major exhibition of its kind in Brisbane.
The aim of FreQee is to expose contemporary Australian counter-culture artists from varying disciplines to a wide ranging audience. As with the DEX exhibition, it offers the artists involved the chance to have their work to be viewed, appreciated and recognised as legitimate arts in a gallery setting.
FreQee is sponsored by The Gallery Store, All-Star Tattoo and Cylinder and features the work of 1337, byrd, Andy Tatt, Ben Constantine, Ben Reeve, Brent Wilson, Brett Weekes, Brett Williams, Briellen Baker, Camilla Zavataro, Celeste Ramos, Charles Mayfield, Clint Steele, Corey Warren, Dan Gibbs, Fleur Beserk, Giles Kilham, gimiks, Glenn Manders, Jamie Brown, GUZ, Jase Harper, John Stewart, KASINO, Kid9, Team Kitten, Lounge Kat, Layla Knight, Link, L.F.
