"No doubt about it: Jonathan Franzen, is one of the most extraordinary writers around. As a writer, Franzen seems less at ease in the real world than he is in a heightened atmosphere of spooky doings and pending disasters." Laura Shapiro, Newsweek

"Jonathan Franzen's first two novels, The Twenty-Seventh City (1988) and Strong Motion (1992), marked him as a writer with a real grasp of our edgy, info-saturated historical moment." Sven Birkerts, Esquire
