TEATER PAYUNG HITAM (BLACK UMBRELLA THEATRE)
Writer & Director Rachman Sabur
Direct from Bandung, West Java, comes this spectacular piece of physical theatre about the struggle for freedom, democracy and normality.
In the eerie silence of swinging boulders suspended from the ceiling, a group of people
emerge making only the rhythmic sound of clashing rocks in their hands. A woman emerges from the chaos with a passionate song. She collapses. Gravel rains upon her. The tale unfolds: this woman is the estranged mother of the group. There is only one thing stopping them from reuniting. She is dead.
Don’t miss this unearthly story of the fight to live, to die, and to remember.
“The most memorable theatrical spectacle I have ever experienced; physical theatre so dangerous I wonder how they survive a performance without seriously injuring themselves. The woman next to me, a Javanese girl wearing a jilbab, is transfixed by the performance; she begins to weep. This is beyond theatre. This is the soul of a nation on stage.”
