Brisbane Powerhouse presents
Mulatu Astatke and The Black Jesus Experience
Fri 22 Oct 2010
ET/AUS
One of Ethiopia’s most influential and legendary musicians, Mulatu Astatke heads to Brisbane for the first time.
Astatke is the godfather of ‘Ethio-jazz’, the infectious music dating back to the 1960s that combines Latin jazz and early soul and funk with traditional Ethiopian harmony. From the late 1960s and 1970s and through to today, Astatke’s global mark on music has been phenomenal.
In his exclusive Australian debut-tour, Astatke joins with Australian/Ethiopian ensemble, The Black Jesus Experience. This local ensemble fuses traditional Ethiopian song with jazz, funk and hip hop and has recently returned from a highly successful tour of Europe and Ethiopia.
Mulatu Astatke (vibes, keyboard, percussion), Negat Abate (vocals), Liam Monkhouse (vocals), Thai Matus (keyboard), Nashua Lee (guitar), James Arbon (reeds, flute), Ian Dixon (trumpet), Peter Harper (sax), Cass Horsfall (bass), Souren Tchakerian (percussion) and Patrick Kearney (drums).
"A master craftsman and one of the most supremely inventive composers of all time." Pitchfork
