Naissance Des Pieuvres (Water Lilies)

Sat 24 May 08

One of the standout discoveries of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival was this beautifully crafted drama – a fiercely perceptive account of doubts, crushes and the offhanded cruelty of adolescent girls.

It's summer in the suburbs, and the local swimming pool is the centre of attention. Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15.  Pint-sized tom-boy Marie doesn’t make the synchronised swim team but lingers. Captivated by star performer, Floriane, a tall, blonde boy magnet, Marie neglects her friendship with plump Anne to get close to her new-found crush.

Sensitive and sometimes witty, this film is a provocative portrait of how hard it is to be a teen girl in the exploratory routes to womanhood.
