Thu 28 Feb - Sun 2 Mar 08
Violinarium - For performance by the general public, and by guest artist John Rodgers
The latest in an ongoing series of large-scale sculptural experimental instruments designed by renowned sound artist Joel Stern and innovative audio-visual engineer, Beh Wattenberg. The interactive Violinarium will be played throughout the festival by the general public. There will be a special performance on Saturday March 1 by renowned musician John Rodgers. 4 long tuned strings made of fencing wire are rigged within an oversize violin shaped body to produce a range of incredible sounds, including thunderous rumbles, metallic shimmering, pure tones, and beautiful harmonic drones, using a range of playing techniques including plucking, rubbing, bowing, and striking with mallets or sticks.
Blunt Instruments - For performance by the general public
A series of small-scale sound sculptures utilising single strings, household piping, inbuilt speakers, and old fashioned horns. Unpredictable and sonically versatile, the Blunt Instruments are a celebration of the simplicity and intuitiveness of amplified strings.
John Rodgers is an improvisor, performer and composer. He is a member of improvising ensembles Bark, Artisan's Workshop, The John Rodgers Trio, the ELISION contemporary music ensemble and the Australian Art Orchestra. John has appeared as a violin soloist with the Queensland Philharmonic and Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony and Hunter Orchestra.
