Sacred Monsters

Sat 22 - Sun 23 Mar 08

Prima ballerina Sylvie Guillem and Kathak master Akram Khan perform two nights only their most intimate show of the Sacred Monsters Australian tour.

Sylvie Guillem: the prima ballerina of our age and ex-étoile with the Paris Opera Ballet.
Akram Khan MBE: one of the most gifted choreographers and dancers of his generation.
Sacred Monsters (monstres sacrés): A 19th century French term that affords luminaries a God-like status but burdens them with the impossible: perfection.

Guillem and Khan have turned on their classical roots to create a pas de deux unlike anything you’ve witnessed before, a new language of classical ballet and Kathak Indian dance. For 75 minutes, the dancers never leave the stage, trading solo riffs, exchanging confessions, baring their souls and finally melding into an exquisite hybrid vision of dance and humanity as one.

Live music by a five-member ensemble sets the perfect backdrop for Guillem’s feats of fluidity and Khan’s whirls of speed. Attracting rave reviews and standing ovations in London, LA and Hong Kong, Sacred Monsters smashes conventions to show us what dance might become.

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Sacred Monsters unites two ravishingly beautiful movers fro opposing classical disciplines – ballet and kathak – and takes them to amazing places neither has gone before. An extraordinary meeting of minds and bodies.” The Times, UK

“An engaging, entertaining journey to a Sacred Place. Guillem and Khan pulled off complicated work with consummate ease.” The Business Times, Singapore

“Inventive, demanding, packed with emotional contradictions” The Sunday Telegraph, UK

Co-producers: Sadler’s Wells (London), Grand Theatre de Luxembourg, Les Nuits de Fourviere/Département du Rhône (Lyon), Missno Limited
