Seven Deadly Gins - Play Reading
Sat 5 Sep 09
After a week of intensive script development under the direction of acclaimed Queensland actor and director, Leah Purcell, seven deadly ladies will present a public reading of Yvette Walker’s new play at Brisbane Powerhouse.
There will be an open floor and Q & A with the cast and director after the reading.
A bonded group of high school girls quickly become embroiled in a murderous event one dark night that will change their lives forever. Lies, betrayal and insanity propel them on seven different journeys until 20 years later when they are called back to the scene of the crime for Magenta’s Hen’s party. This is Seven Deadly Gins.
This is a journey of sisterhood and individual challenges that takes place in the late 1990’s in the seaside Brisbane suburb of Wynnum.
Magenta and Moselle lead a gang of seven Indigenous girls that have been friends since infancy. Hardened by their life experiences and the neighbourhood they live in they are very bright and intelligent but at the same time can be extremely ‘Deadly’.
During a ritual drink up and smoke up at Magenta’s mothers house one night things takes a twisted and dark turn as the girls find it hard to discern between fantasy and reality in their story telling. Through the playing out of a sacred (Secret Women’s Business) tale of women in the desert Magenta’s mother is murdered. Upon sobering up no one can remember exactly how it happened and Magenta’s best friend Moselle takes the wrap for it. Now separated and scared the girls head in different directions and lose contact with each other.
After running away, Magenta returns twenty years later to call everyone back together to confront the night of the murder of her mother a week before she is due to marry. All women gather for the Hen’s party at the scene of the murder with their own agenda’s; and as the night progresses niceties fall away and we are left with raw emotion and the truth... the truth about that night and the Seven Deadly Gins.
