Brisbane Powerhouse presents

Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat

Wed 2 - Sat 5 Jul 08

BY STEPHEN MICHAEL KING
MONKEY BAA THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (AUSTRALIA)

The whole family will love this whimsical tale celebrating creativity, friendship and following your dreams.

Milli is a solitary shoemaker with a special gift: fixing things. But people in the town only want ordinary, practical things, like very plain shoes. Night after night Milli dreams that she is brave enough to show everyone what she can really do. But each day is the same, until one morning she meets a couple of free spirits, Jack and the Dancing Cat.

These travelling vagabonds dance their way into her life, and together they make the ordinary extraordinary. Jack and Cat are in need of sturdy new boots, but what can they give Milli in exchange? Dance lessons! They teach her jazz and ballet and the two-step, the three-step and the tricky twisting-backward-slide-four step. As her confidence grows Milli begins to make things for herself – a fantastic water fountain and a swirling dress especially for dancing. Eventually even the townsfolk are captivated by her extraordinary talent and nothing after that is ‘ever the same as before’.

Monkey Baa recently won the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Children’s Presentation and the 2007 Drover for Touring Excellence.

The Australian Government is proud to be associated with this tour through the national performing arts touring program, Playing Australia, which gives Australians across the country the opportunity to see some of our best performing arts.
