Brisbane Powerhouse presents
The Grigoryan Brothers featuring Wolfgang Muthspiel
Sun 5 Dec 2010
This concert brings together three acknowledged masters of the guitar world - Australia’s own Grigoryan Brothers and Austrian genius Wolfgang Muthspiel.
Regarded as Australia’s finest classical guitar duo, the Grigoryan Brothers are constantly expanding the boundaries of guitar performance. This is manifestly stated with their ground-breaking release ‘Distance’. As reviewed in Limelight Magazine ‘Rather than a pan-global statement, it feels as if different cultures have slipped in on a secret mission’ - and that mission is to keep challenging themselves and their audience whilst maintaining emotional communication with the listener.
Muthspiel is an adventurer in the classical and jazz worlds - always looking for new territories to discover, not only in his playing, but in collaborations and compositions – a reflection of his influences: from Messiaen, Bach's lute works, renaissance choral and Austrian folk music to Miles Davis, Prince and Bill Evans.
Performing together, with an array of guitars, both acoustic and electric, diverse influences, stunning technique and risk-taking improvisations, this promises to be a unique musical experience for jazz and classical music aficionados.
"Wolfgang Muthspiel is a shining light of the contemporary jazz-guitar generation.” The New Yorker
"Muthspiel is in many ways a quintessential musician, combining a flawless technique honed by classical training with a restless musical imagination as likely to derive inspiration from Bach as from the blues or the Beatles." The London Times
“The Grigoryans have a reputation of performing together so emphatically, they become extensions of each other.” The West Australian
