Brisbane Powerhouse presents

World Press Photo 09

Sat 6 - Sun 28 Jun 09

Attracting two million people each year in over 100 different locations, the world’s most prestigious annual exhibition of photojournalism returns to Brisbane.

The 52nd annual World Press Photo exhibition profiles the globe’s top press photographers and showcases the world’s best press photos of 2008. World Press Photo is the leading international competition in press photography. This year the competition received 80,536 entries from 5,508 professional photographers from 124 countries.

The international jury awarded prizes across ten theme categories to 62 photographers, including one Australian: Mark Dadswell, Getty Images for his picture of Usain Bolt winning the men's 200m final at the Beijing Olympic Games.

The prestigious World Press Photo of the Year was awarded to American photographer Anthony Suau for a black-and-white image of an armed officer of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department moving through a home in Ohio, following eviction as a result of mortgage foreclosure. Officers have to ensure that the house is clear of weapons, and that the residents have moved out. The winning photograph, taken in March 2008, is part of a story commissioned by Time magazine. The story as a whole won Second Prize in the Daily Life category of the contest.
